HEALDSBURG FUTURE FARMERS COUNTRY FAIR

VINE JUDGING CONTEST 2008

RULES

The Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair is open to members of the Alexander Valley, Gateway, Warm Springs, Healdsburg, and Westside 4-H Clubs and members of the Healdsburg Future Farmers of America Chapter who reside in Healdsburg, Geyserville, or Windsor High School District, including those members residing on Shiloh Road, are eligible to enter.

The HFFCF Vine Judging Contest will take place on Saturday May 17, 2008 promptly at 9 AM please meet at the Healdsburg High Swim Center. There will be classes for FFA, 4-H Senior, 4-H Junior, and Novice (if committee decides). All contestants will be judged together and scores will be separated out in the above classes. Awards will be given for 1st to 5th place in the form of ribbons, prizes, and cash($50 for the winner of each class, additional $100 for overall winner). An Overall Vine Judging Champion winner will be announced for the individual having the highest score, regardless of class, in the contest. Awards will be presented beginning at 4pm on Saturday before the Fair Awards Ceremony.

The contest will consist of two sets of Vine Judging Reasons (each judging set will be made up of four vines). Each contestant will have 20 minutes to evaluate the four vines and then will have up to 3 minutes to provide verbal reasons for placement to a judge. The judge may also ask questions of each contestant during the reasons segment. Contestants will have a total potential score of 100 points per class. 50 points for how they placed the class and 50 points for their reasons. The judges will use the Vine Judging Scorecard to place each class of vines. 

Each contestant will be allowed to bring a clipboard, writing instrument, and blank paper to the contest. Notes will not be allowed while giving reasons and no talking between the contestants will be permitted. Each contestant will be required to be in dress uniform. 

To ensure that adequate training is provided we will hold a vine judging workshop open to registered contestants. The Vine judging workshop will be held on May 3rd, 2008 from 9AM to 11:30AM, meet at swim center at HHS. Each contestant will earn 5 bonus points by attending the Vine Judging Workshop – this will be applied to your overall score for the contest.

Each 4-H club and the FFA will be required to organize and assist individuals from their clubs that want to participate, and leaders are encouraged to attend the Vine Judging Workshop. All contestants will be responsible for their own transportation for the workshop and the Vine Judging Contest.
