The HFFCF Vine Judging Contest will take place on Saturday May 14th promptly at 9 AM
please meet at the Healdsburg High Swim Center. There will be classes for FFA, 4-H Senior, 4-
H Junior, and Novice (if committee decides). All contestants will be judged together and scores
will be separated out in the above classes. Awards will be given for 1st to 5th place in the form
of ribbons and cash ($100 for the winner of each class, additional $50 for overall winner).
An Overall Viticultural Champion will be announced for the individual having the highest score,
regardless of class, based on scores from the judging and pruning contests. Awards will be
presented beginning at 4pm on Saturday before the Fair Awards Ceremony.

The contest will consist of two sets of Vine Judging Reasons (each judging set will be made up
of four vines). Each contestant will have 20 minutes to evaluate the four vines and then will
have up to 3 minutes to provide verbal reasons for placement to a judge. The judge may also ask
questions of each contestant during the reasons segment. Contestants will have a total potential
score of 100 points per class. 50 points for how they placed the class and 50 points for their
reasons. The judges will use the Vine Judging Scorecard to place each class of vines.

Each contestant will be allowed to bring a clipboard, writing instrument, and blank paper to the
contest. Notes will not be allowed while giving reasons and no talking between the contestants
will be permitted. Each contestant will be required to be in dress uniform.

To ensure that adequate training is provided we will hold a vine judging workshop open to
registered contestants. The Vine judging workshop will be held on April 30th from 9AM to
11:30AM, meet at swim center at HHS. Each contestant will earn 5 bonus points by attending the
Vine Judging Workshop – this will be applied to your overall score for the contest.

Each 4-H club and the FFA will be required to organize and assist individuals from their clubs
that want to participate, and leaders are encouraged to attend the Vine Judging Workshop. All
contestants will be responsible for their own transportation for the workshop and the Vine
Judging Contest.

Each contestant must complete the Registration Form and have it returned and postmarked by
May 1st. Any Questions please call 707 975 3152 and ask for John.
